Hiring a Freelance Writer: Tips  for getting a good rate and quality work

The first time you embark on hiring a freelance writer for a writing project, you might think that it's going to be a piece of cake, but hiring a freelance writer who will not only provide quality work but a reasonable rate as well as being easy to work with can be trickier than it seems.

Choosing the writer with the lowest rate is likely to end up costing more in the long run when you have to have the work redone, but choosing the writer with the highest rate doesn't mean that you'll be receiving the best value either.

If possible, allow ample time to not only find the right writer, but for the writer to complete the job. Writers typically schedule their week out in advance as most professionals do, and squeezing in a last minute project will cost you more.  By inflicting a very tight deadline, you'll be less likely to receive bids from high quality, professional writers.

Take some time to review market rates to become familiar with the average cost of specific types of jobs.  WritersMarket.com is an excellent source for this information.

When making a decision as to which writer to hire, consider references from past clients, as well as the details of their proposal to you. Did the writer take the time to show you how he or she can help you by providing sample articles or other previous work? Did the writer personalize their proposal or send what appears to be a form letter?

Once you've begun working with a writer, be sure to keep in touch. Communication is key for any relationship, and it can be especially true in this situation. By developing a professional yet friendly relationship with the hired writer or writers, they'll be more likely to provide discounts in addition to working diligently at providing their best work. It's much easier to work with the same writer than to have to start the process all over again, costing you more time and money.
